The Social Security Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-603) established a national program with uniform payment standards and eligibility requirements for the needy aged, blind, and disabled. The supplemental security income (SSI) program replaced the federally assisted, State-administered programs of old-age assistance, aid to the blind, and aid to the permanently and totally disabled.
